We all face challenges.....

We all face challenges, but it is how we deal with them that is important. If we had to face a 10th of what some of these individuals I work with, have to face everyday, we would think we had it rough, yet, they are so use to it, that they just deal with.

We do face a lot of challenges, because of the multiple health problems the individuals have. All of them deal with mental retardation, and as if this is not enough, there are other problems that they face, some will only face a few of these and a few will have all of these:

$ Mental Retardation
$ Downs Syndrome
$ Autism – several different types
$ Impulse Control Issues
$ Mental Illness

Then there are the physical issues, such as”

$ Cancer
$ Intestinal problems
$ Poor or no vision
$ Hearing problems(one lady is blind and almost deaf)
$ Short fuses

So as you can see there are a lot of variables, you do have to be very flexible, because what works for you, may not work for me and in a few minutes it may not even work for you.

We do have a lot of rules and restrictions, from the local, city, county, state and federal governments. We have to be very careful in how you handle situations, because they can be interpreted the wrong way. Like we are told never ever raise your voice, but there are individuals who that is the only way to get their attention. Then there is the NO HOLDS, unless it is a matter of life and death. So if you do use a hold, you better be sure you can justify it, because it will be investigated and if it is proven that you shouldn’t have used it, they can and will call the state police and have you escorted off grounds, file abuse charges against you!! Abuse is a serious issue here. And you are thinking why do we even talk about holds, well, remember, I mentioned that some have impulse control issues along with short fuses, that and have mental illness so they do flip out once in a while, we always try to talk them back to reality and some of us are quite successful at this, but once in a while you do have to use a hold, even then you want to be careful how you do it, because you do not want to cause anymore problems for them than they already have.
