I know Halloween is a month away, but I'm curious as to what others think of this event. I don't mean to bring this up as a debate or this is right or wrong, more of what does your family do for this day and why?

Our family used to dress my daughter up in cute little outfits and go door to door. The candy was mostly for us, but she had fun. Now we have choosen to spend that night a different church functions. When Erika was in private school they always put together a big to do for the kids. They would call it "harvest festival" or something like that.
Do you think it would be bad to go door to door and give gospel tracks that night? Just curious.....

Hhmmmm I can't stand halloween. Although when my kid was young enough I didn't see any harm in letting him have a little fun with it. I always pass out candy to the kids, because your only a kid once. Times have changed though and more parents are sending their kids to church functions for safty reasons, and that's a good thing. Then their exposed to Jesus and that sheds a bright light on such a dark holiday. If you want to call it that.

Personally I can do without it. Tracks make awesome treats.

We usually have done the trick or treat thing,
With us its always been one of those touchy subjects that we are always debating ourselves about. Last year we worked a harvest festival at church and it was a huge success so that is probably where we will go from now on plus the kids are getting older.

The way the world has commercialized All of the holidays its hard to really know what they truley stand for anymore anyway.
The most important seem to be those where you get something followed closly by the ever popular 3 day weekend.
My favorites will always be Christmas and Easter so I can glorify the Lord- Though I make it a habit to do that everyday- and I try to let the kids know not to read to much into Halloween. The way satan has destroyed the values of this world it seems like everyday could be Halloween.
Yet we always have that hope that lies within. :igrin:

Tristen, what do you think about handing out gospel tracks door to door, or giving gospel tracks to kids that come to your door?

It is sad how everything is commercialized. I'm also sad that they don't even call it Christmas in public school, it's called, "Holidays". Kids don't sing concerts and so much more, but we will post about christmas once it gets closer :igrin:

Thanks for everyones post. The input has been awesome :igrin:

God Bless

JTDaily,

I think that handing out gospel tracks it a great idea. I have been wanting to make little pieces of paper to go with each candy to hand out that gives something about God on it. Like, "Jesus loves you" and maybe some scriptures on it. I just have never been able to get the time to do it. I know, I know, there is no excuse. I tend to think that the Harvest Festivals are the best thing to do since the kids love it. If they grow up with that, then that is all they will know and they won't miss what the other kids are doing.

Last year was the first year that my kids ever went trick-or treating.
It was a hard decision to make, and I think the pressure of their sad faces made me give in. I didn't know whether to feel good or bad about it, because I never had them begging me to do it before.
They do know what holloween is all about, and the also know what the harvest is all about. They weren't allowed to say "trick-or-treat". Instead they had to just politely ask for the candy. Yeah...I think I comprimised

Hard to say "No" to those pouty faces of those we cherish the most, Huh.
Me Too.

About the tracks, I think thats okay though I have never been a tract passer outer(that can't be even remotely gramatically correct ha), though livingwaters.com has some really cool ones. Like my wife said we've considered putting notes of Gods love in with the candy.

Just a fact I happened upon,
When we feel bad about letting our kids trick or treat we can thank the church for the holiday. The online Encarta Encyclopedia states:

Halloween began as the Celtic/Druidic holiday of Samhain which was the end of their year, Then the Roman empire conquered the Celts and the holiday only existed in remote areas not under Roman rule. The Romans adapted some of the Samhain customs with their own harvest fest. The Roman Catholic church often incorporated others religious traditions to win converts and there we have "All Saints Day".
It never really had the negative conotations until the 15th-17th centuries when Europe was seized with a hysterical fear of witches.
The 1930 to present have evolved it from a holiday of pranks to a more vadalistic holiday it has become in some areas.

Anyway I thought that was interesting.
