Default Guardian Angels

I posted this on my site and it turned into an interesting topic. Was wondering what the awesome members of this site thing of Guardian Angels. Do you believe in them? Do they watch over you and protect you?

Do we have guardian angels? The Bible doesn't give a definitive answer on that, although the Lord Jesus did say, "See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven." (Matthew 18:10) And Psalm 91:11 promises, "For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways."

One day, when my son was a baby, I tripped while I was holding him, and he went flying headlong toward a brick wall. There was nothing I could do to protect him, but I watched as he inexplicably stopped an inch from the wall and fell gently to the carpet. I knew immediately that an angel's hand had been his bumper pad.

These are only a few of the stories of thousands about angels who protected and rescued people, both Christians and non- Christians. But a nagging question continues to arise: where are the angels when girls are raped, and drunk drivers crash headlong into a car of teenagers, and evil people blow up buildings with hundreds of innocent people in them?

The angels are still there, continuing to minister in pain and death. We usually don't realize the role of angels in the midst of horrible circumstances because their work is unseen and often unfelt.

Behind the question of, "Where are the angels?" is the very difficult problem of why a good God would allow pain and suffering. The book of Job gives us two important insights into the problem of pain: first, when disasters and suffering assail us in the physical realm, there may be something bigger and more important going on in the unseen spiritual realm.{5} Second, God never gives Job an answer to his demand to know the "why": He just says, "I am the sovereign Lord, acting in ways you cannot understand. You just need to trust Me, that I know what I'm doing." The fact that God is in control, that He allows all pain and suffering for a reason, is the great comfort that we need to remember when it seems like the angels have forsaken us. They haven't, because God hasn't.

I like this topic, brother! Thanks for sharing it.

Me, I do believe in gardian angels. Though often people tend to idolize them (which is even warned about in Colossians 2:18!) by often thinking angels are beings like God who have their own agenda and act on their own, and they leave God out of the equation. Angels . . . are messengers. They are under command of God.

Now, I believe in Guardian Angels, because of how in the Word of God they do mention how they minister to us and He will charge His angels over us to protect us (in the verse you mentioned, Psalm 91:11).

But also, there are countless times I should have died when I did not, and know for certain that it was because God held firm to His Word in Psalm 91:11-12.

Yet still, in one situation I saw one when I was a kid. My sister and I were sleeping in the living room of the apartment we were in (we were kids at the time). She was on one couch and I was on another. Well, I believe it was close to 1 o'clock in the morning and I woke up. Not sure why I woke up, but I was facing my sister on the other couch, and I saw a tall man standing over her. I called out my sister's name to make sure it wasn't her (just in case I were seeing things ) and I noticed she was definitely still sleeping.

But, the man was tall and had one of his legs over her (one on the ground, the other on the couch over her) as in a guard or watch position. He turned and looked at me for a moment, and then went back to watching over my sister. Recalling it all, He didn't have this white robe that everyone envisions angels in. I could tell he had some sort of "lightweight" armour on (best I could describe it) that didn't look protective, but I knew it was very protective. I also, didn't see a sword on his side, or any weapon, but I knew that if he needed one it would be instantly at his side. Just something I could tell, like with his clothing being armour though it didn't look like it.

After seeing all this though, I closed my eyes and went back to sleep. That is a main way I knew it was an angel, because of the peace and the lack of fear in it all. Being a kid, if you saw some strange, big, warrior-like man standing in the dark in your living room over your sister, normally you'd be terrified. But I felt peace and was able to go back to sleep, knowing it was an angel. The times I've seen demons . . . whew, those put a fear in you and a vile feeling that you just wanted it GONE immediately! So it definitely wasn't that either!

So . . .yes, I definitely believe in guardian angels, but always remember that they are under charge from God and not divine beings acting alone and deserving of worship and such. They are here to help us, not bring our eyes off God.

EDITED to add:
Oh, as for the question you posed, which is a good one! I don't know, the way I can see things, is that those who are in Christ belong to God and therefore the devil, just as with Job, must get permission to mess with us and bring harm and troubles to us. However, those lost souls in the world, though God loves them, they are still the children of the devil (John 8:44) until they come to Christ, and the devil has a good deal of rights to do with them what he wants to do unless God specifically forbids him. So, in a way, when such tragedies strike, it is either because God has allowed the thing to happen to His Child for growth, or ultimately to bring him/her home . . . or they happen because the people in the situations are truly under the devil's hand because they have not turned to Christ (And God makes sure they've opportunity in their lives to hear the Truth, so none are without excuse). I don't know though, I guess it's difficult to explain what I mean, without sounding like I give the devil too much, and limit God.

Yes, I absolutely believe we have guardian angels. The most convincing evidence is that God says we do, as in the scriptures already mentioned. However, I know that I would have never survived my teenage years without a guardian angel. As many teenagers, I believed I was invincible. Many times I put my life in great danger, and now I can look back and easily say that God had angels protecting me.

When our camp director’s son was hit by a boat and killed, another girl was on the raft with him. The boat struck them and knocked the both deep under water. While she was under water she saw a very bright flash of light. When the ambulance came to take her to the hospital she was ministered to by a angel. The angel told her that he was dead but he is very happy where he is now. She knew that he was dead before everyone else, because it took 2 weeks to locate his body. These words also comforted his parents, even though their grief has been long and hard.

Well thank you both for that awesome testimony. I too, have positive feelings towards angels. we all know or at least should know that the serpent was one of God's favorite angels and it is because of his wanting to be independant from God that got him and his companions cast down below earth. Could you imagine what the world be like if Satan kept to his duties and never betrayed God? Do you think that could of have been possible, meaning would that have been a part of Gods plan?

I can relate to what Micheal has said because there have been many times that I should have been taken from this world because of selfish desisions and careless ways. Although I have never seen an angel in the way Micheal may have seen one, I do firmly believe in them and pray for their protection through Jesus' name.

Some believe that a guardian angel is with you from the day you are born and it is that angels duties to protect you through your lifetime. Do you think this is the case or is it angels in general that have the duties to protect?

I truly believe we have guardian angels, along with God's grace. I know it is only by and through Him I'm alive today and it is because I was being watched over in my low times.
