The Greek word pas, meaning ‘all’, occurs four times in the great commission:
• All authority (v 18)
• All nations (v 19)
• Everything (v 20, literally ‘all things’)
• Always (v 20, literally ‘all times’)
All Authority
The basis on which Jesus commands us with the great commission is the authority that he holds. He is the ultimate authority in the world. Because he proved his obedience, the Father was willing to hand this to the Son.
When we take his message, we are ambassadors for Christ. We act on his authority.
All Nations
We now know that the world is a lot bigger than a first-century Jew thought. In Christ, there is no Jew or Gentile (see Galatians 3:28). So his message is to be taken to everyone. There are no second routes to the Father (see John 14:6), so everyone needs to hear it.
All Things
It’s easy to pick and choose from the things Jesus commanded. Some of it is exceptionally difficult, but that doesn’t mean we can leave it for the keen ones. He expects each one of us to obey every part of it.
All Times
When Jesus commands he accompanies it with this basic, fundamental promise: he is with us. The one who was abandoned by the Father (see Matthew 27:46) affirms that he will never do that to us, for he knows at first hand what that is like.
It is amazing how that little word 'ALL' can cause so much distress. God doesn't say "all, BUT,". All is just that all. He wants us to give Him our ALL. Not bits and pieces, not almost, not "I'll just keep this part." This is something we 'all' will struggle and fight with until the day God takes us home. We are human, we do hold back - like it or not. We do that out of fear or out of feeling someone will have one up on us. No matter the reason, He gave His ALL for us.
May God richly bless all who pass through here today.
