Default A Work in Progress

Parenting Tip

How you view your children and what you think about discipline can help you stay calm and use healthy routines when things get tough. Imagine a car dealership where a man named Martin works in the showroom. Martin sells cars to prospective customers. If he sees a car without a door, he’s surprised and upset. He doesn’t expect to see defects. Cars in the showroom are supposed to be finished.

Bill, on the other hand, works in the factory and inspects cars for flaws and missing parts. It’s his job to find problems and fix them. In fact, Bill is prepared with a number of routines depending on the nature of the problem. If a door is missing, Bill doesn’t get upset; he just goes through his routine of obtaining a door and putting it on.

Bill knows that when a car is on the production line it requires continual work. Doors are added, pieces are put together, and workers are continually looking for ways to improve the product.

Viewing your children as works in progress instead of as finished products can help you respond to them without harshness or frustration. Like Bill, you can view problems as opportunities. Misbehavior and relational struggles are indicators of where your child needs help to grow and mature.

Parents are often frustrated by the continual need for correction and the endless number of mistakes that children make. If you can remember that your children are on the production line instead of in the showroom, your expectations will lead you to solutions instead of to anger.

Paul knew that his readers were a work in progress when he said in Philippians 1:6 "he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." God is also at work in your children and sometimes it takes time to see progress.

This tip comes from the book, "Good and Angry, Exchanging Frustration for Character in You and Your Kids,” by Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller.

What an awesome post! Childhood is supposed to be a time of making mistakes, learning and growing, and becoming that 'finished product.' So many times I see parents demanding perfection in their child, criticizing and belittling them in their failures, and not building them up to try again. The child gives up before they start. It is ok to fail! So many take that learning away from their child. My thought has always been 'the only time you ever fail is when you fail to try.' One child's best is not the same as another's. And each child needs to know that they are a unique individual, a part of whole.

Pray Re: A Work in Progress

This is an awesome post, and one thought I have, we could also use this in our lives and realize that we are children of God and we are a work in progress, but we could also use it on our friends, because friendships have to be worked on to stay a success, if we do not work on our friends, they will soon be gone.

A GREAT big AMEN there! My stepfather, Kent, is the type of person who has a habit of believing kids already know better and that if they make a mistake they should be scolded full force as an adult, because they afterall should know better and are doing it to spite everyone!

Yet, often he need to be reminded that kids are not like that, they need to be taught. And also . . . do you personally learn from mistakes the first time around? When you do something wrong, do you immediately change for the better? When you have a bad habit or something, how long does it take you to learn otherwise?

Many times we need to remember and take into consideration how long it has taken US to learn the things we know now, and apply that to children and remind ourselves that it will not happen overnight. You may definitely have to teach children over and over and over again and again before they get it right . . . Remember God, the ultimate Dad, and how He is with us!

I think we can all learn from our mistakes the first time around, but the "kid" in us, and with satans help, we slip up again and again.
