Which method does your pastor use to teach? The church I came from taught expository and now I attend a church that teaches topical. I must say I prefer expository teaching, but I would love to hear from you all.

Topical teaching: Taking a topic from the bible and teaching from it. Usually random selections.

Expository teaching: Choosing a book of the bible and teaching it verse by verse.
A lot of people think this keeps you in one book of the bible to long. Because the bible is harmonized, this method takes you all over the bible. Old testament and new testament. When I was being taught expositional, I was all over the bible every Sunday. Now that I'm being taught topically, I tend to see one verse and a couple of other locations in the bible. My spiritual growth has seemed to slow down quite a bit. I'm not sure I can necessarily tie the two together, but it sure seems that way. Anyway, I would love to hear what you guys think. Please don't think I'm putting down topical teaching. My comments are more on the lines of one being better than the other.

My current pastor teaches in a Topical way... i have experienced just a little of Expository teaching but i can say this method (expository) surely goes more deeply (in comparison the topical) in the scriptures.

I sure would like to experience more of Expository teaching, with more knowledge about expository teaching, I know I so could give alittle of more feedback in this subject.

you know at my church it really goes both ways, on sunday mornings it tends to be topical, then on sunday nights it tends to be expository.
Also we have a prayer meeting wed. in which he again gives an expository sermon to sum up the night, we are currently studying the book of Job on wed. night and it is great. I guess we get the best of both world at my church

I have to agree Jt, I really like expository teachings. Though currently our pastor teaches topically. I seek the expository teaching through bible studies.

We tend to go down the expository line, at the moment we are working through Hebrews. The same passage is read and preached on Sunday mornings and evenings and read, studied and discussed in mid-week small groups. So the whole church is looking at the same verses at the same time.

We occasionally do have topical services, but these tend to be occasion based (Christmas, Easter, Pentecost etc).

Right now I'm going through a inductive study of James. I guess it would be nice to have it both ways, but that isn't where God has me right now. I wanted to say that I love our pastor. He is a very Godly man and a great teacher. If you met him I know you would agree. Maybe one day he will switch....

Thanks for all of you posts. They confirmed a lot of what I was feeling.

God Bless
Jt
